Rev. Matthew A. Mimlitz, Pastor

St. John Church is part of the United Church of Christ, a UCC denomination formed in 1957 through the union of the Congregational Christian Church and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Our members come from the larger Naperville area, including Aurora, Downers Grove, Lisle, Bolingbrook, Woodridge, Yorkville, and Elmhurst.

Our Sunday worship service, church school, youth groups, men’s and women’s groups, and all activities are open to everyone. Our theology is open and accepting; we welcome questions and the expression of each person’s point of view. Any professing Christian is welcome to share in Holy Communion. We think of our congregation as a large, loving family, with persons of all ages joining in worship, study, fellowship, and service.

Our morning worship is at 10:00 AM all year, with lay persons participating each Sunday as ushers, choir members, greeters, and liturgists who read the Scripture lessons, and lead in prayer and other parts of the service. We have adult and children’s choirs as well as vocal and instrumental soloists.

From September through June we have Church School classes in God’s Garden sharing in activities such as Theater, Cooking, Games and Crafts for children at the same time as worship. During the summer months the younger children have an enrichment time rather than individual classes, and Vacation Bible School. We also have classes for adults and youth in addition to an ongoing youth program for Jr. and Sr. Highs. Their schedule is announced in the church newsletter and a newsletter for youth. Among their activities have been summer work trips and UCC National Youth Events.

German settlers founded our local church in 1857, and our first building is now known as the “Meeting House” in the Naper Settlement. Since 1995 we have offered a worship service in the German language following our regular service on the first Sunday of each month.

We participate in many outreach programs, including DuPage PADS, Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, Neighbors in Need, UNICEF, Heifer Project International, One Great Hour of Sharing, Hesed House, Wayside Cross Ministries, Lifelink, Blanket Sunday for Church World Service, “Shoe Boxes” through Samaritan’s Purse Organization, Feed My Starving Children, Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, and “Our Church’s Wider Mission”.

Our fellowship activities include women’s afternoon circle, a men’s breakfast group, coffee hour every Sunday, progressive dinners, social nights, picnics, Advent workshop, potluck dinners, Easter Breakfast and Egg Hunt, attending baseball games and Ravinia nights, and fellowship campfires.

We are also home to Peter Pan North, a preschool that provides exceptional learning experiences for children ages 2 through 5 in a warm, nurturing environment.
